A Disguise So Thin: Cases of Mistaken Identity

A Disguise So Thin: Historical Cases of Mistaken Identity

It isn't just Chloe who is lost in the annals of history - some examples of historical figures lost, confused, or controversially identified over the course of time.

"That’s what the history books all say."
"And do you believe the history books?"
"Well… yeah."

-- An exchange between a student and a Comparative Literature professor, January 2010

It is popular to think of history in the same way as one might think of the Superman mythos— a concrete set of events, dates, names. Smallville is presented as a prequel to the Superman story; to view it in a different way, the show can be viewed as a behind-the-scenes history of Superman. Smallville’s writers delight in twisting what we think we know, crafting a show that could be subtitled “Lies the Mythos Told Me.”

The episode “Legion” (8.11) draws this issue to the forefront. In the time of the Legion of Superheroes, Superman is history. There is a museum dedicated to his feats and the smallest details are known about him, including the story of the first baseball he ever hit. And yet, there are things they don’t know, including the identity of Chloe Sullivan, Clark Kent’s best friend and someone apparently absent from the life of Superman. The episode throws Chloe’s fate out as a historical mystery for the Legionnaires. Who is she? If she is so important, why don’t they know who she is? Why have they never heard of Chloe Sullivan?

The Star Online: School Is In

Smallville, Episode 3.11: Chloe and ClarkSmallville, Episode 3.11: Chloe and Clark

The Star did a list of the top school-centric television series; Smallville was number three!  Also on the list was Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Veronica Mars, Gossip Girl, My So Called Life, Freaks and Geeks, The Wonder Years, and Friday Night Lights.

For long term fans, the write up was particularly enjoyable, highlighting Chloe and Clark, and how their reporting pushed the series forward with all of the Wall of Weird cases to solve. The write up does a nice job illustrating why the Chloe/Clark relationship is the back bone to the series, and honestly makes the case (sans one mention of her cousin) why Chloe Sullivan clearly fulfills the role of the iconic Lois Lane in this series:

Need rescuing? If you go to the same school as Clark Kent (Tom Welling), he will definitely save you.

Downplaying his super strength, Clark tries not to do anything that would gain him attention. Luckily his best friend – a nosey Chloe Sullivan (Alison Mack), Lois Lane’s cousin – is always sniffing for trouble, forcing Clark to use his powers to get them out of fixes.

The duo go to Smallville High, where Chloe runs the school paper. Her speciality is investigating the weird and the unexplained, of which there are plenty in Smallville. Both of them are fearless in doing the right thing, so much so, that the principal has to back down a bit when it comes to these two.

The Destiny Project

You are destined to be a big shot reporter at the Daily Planet.

We all know that Clark Kent is destined to be a hero, and Lex Luthor a villain, but just how often is this 'destiny' thrown about anyways? And what specifically does this destiny mean? A look at the word usage, whom has a destiny, and what exactly the foretold future is according to the dialog from the Pilot until Doomsday.

Stand by Me: Shot Composition & Chlois

A fairly comprehensive look at the mise en scene of the major ships on the show, with a focus on the peculiar use of two-shot and how it is used to up the partnership nature of the Clark/Chloe relationship.

Meanwhile,Chloe's working in the Torch; Jonathan visits her with the tea cup that Kara used.  Jonathan asks her to run the prints as a personal favor; Chloe backs off her third degree and agrees, telling him it might take a little time.

She meets with Lex later that night; Lex reveals to her that his dad is sick and dying and she gives Lex an out to stop with the legal process.  Lex says he's not giving up; his father is a dying man with little to loose. However, he wants her to have all the facts of what's going on before she commits; she assures him that she's "not backing down."

I can't control some bleach blond Pulitzer wannabe from dredging up evidence for a decades-old homicide!

Chloe is at the Metropolis courthouse waiting for Clark to show up - in a pretty black suit.  She talks with Lex, questioning why Clark wouldn't show up at all - and notices Clark (in his standard 'Superman' SV outfit) through the crowd. Clark breezes past Lex and her; she takes off after him leaving Lex alone.

3.20, Talisman

Chloe notes that Pete spent the night in his clothes from yesterday after she walked in on the tail end of a conversation of a phone conversation of his in the Torch.  While she tries to be supportive, Pete brushes he off completely.*  Later that day, she convinces Lana to ask Lex for money for tuition to go to Paris, pointing out that Lex wouldn't let a minor bump in the road detour him.

The next day, Chloe runs into Pete in the hallway late at night.  She unlocks the Torch for him, making small talk about a promotion his mom is up for.  Pete accuses her of not stopping "until [she] gets her scoop."  Chloe denies it and points out that she's his friend. But Pete continues, "You're both. And it's pretty obvious which one comes first."  He understands now why Clark got so angry with her all the time; hurt, Chloe gives him the key to the Torch and leaves.

Chloe comes into the Torch early the next day; Pete's mom was looking for him but Chloe covered for him.  Pete bitterly admits that she solved the mystery.  Chloe admits that she's lived through divorce court - only at the time she hid out in the garage because she didn't have a drivers license.  She gives Pete a hug.

* The Chloe/Pete scenes were originally written by Jeph Loeb to be part of Legacy. Her actual scenes shot for Talisman are in the deleted scenes at Clark's birthday worrying about why Clark is so late.

3.21, Forsaken

Chloe goes with Lana to have one last look around the Talon before Lana hands over the keys to the new owner.  Neither are thrilled about it being turned into a burrito bar; they meet Emily who is posing as the new owners daughter.  Lana thinks she recognizes her but it doesn't go very far; she agrees to show "Emma" the ropes of the Talon.

Lionel visits the Torch later that night, giving Chloe a picture of Emily and demanding her help; Chloe is dead pan and sarcastic towards him but recognizes Emily and shows it to Clark the next day.  Clark helps her piece together that it is Emily, that Lionel must of grabbed her last year, and Clark mentions that they'd got to keep Emily away from Lex due to Lex working with the FBI.  Chloe is taken aback and points out about Lex's grandparents' murder; Clark refutes that citing that "[they] never had hard evidence before about what Lionel was doing."  But that if they found Emily, they would have evidence that Lionel was illegally cloning people.

Chloe goes to talk to Lex; she tells him what Lionel erased - about MorganEdge, the murder, memory wipe, the confession, her entanglement with his father - and about what she had, the voicemail confession.  She points out that he has enough clout to resurrect that confession and use it.  Lex thanks her for coming forward and Chloe admits that she knows Luthor politics can be deadly but she knows he'll take care of her.

3.17, Legacy

No Chloe.  The scenes originally written for Chloe in this episode which deal with history with mother, and her parent's divorse and early life were later moved Talisman, removing the parallel about Lex to his father, Clark to his father, and Chloe to her father.  Instead, she becomes featured in yet another episode about the mythology of
Numan and Seigeith.

3.18, Truth

Chloe confronts an old co-worker of her fathers; he tells her that Lex is opening projects that no one wants to be a part of, and that while he's sorry about what happened to Gabe, it's probably best that Gabe puts LuthorCorp behind him.    Chloe, confused as to why her father hasn't been able to land a job despite being a former manager, steals the man's entrance card and sneaks onto LuthorCorp's third level.   Chloe starts looking around when a big black dog frightens her; she bumps into a machine that douses her with a green gas.  Chloe passes out and then runs out of LuthorCorp.

3.16, Crisis

Chloe and Lana are studying when Clark ends up getting a phone call at the Teen Crisis Center from Lana in danger - from the future.  While the sheriff thinks it's a prank but Chloe, Lana, and Clark investigate it at the Torch.  Chloe cleans up the audio somewhat, noting storm in the background, Adam screaming that Lana lied to him, and Clark helps her pick out a game of the Vipers that hasn't been played

Later that day, Chloe's contacted her source at the phone company who traced a call to a woman who works at the hospital whom none of them know.   Clark points out that they have the advantage of knowing at least some of what is going to happen; he says they should get Lana out to the farm away from Adam.  Chloe follows to the farm waiting for Clark to try to find the cellphone but Clark misses Adam.  She decides to go to the Torch to see if she can hear anything on the police scanner; Jonathan lets her borrow the truck because he doesn't want her car getting stranded in the rain.  Meanwhile, Clark is waylaid after meeting up with Lex by Metropolis PD and later the FBI Lex makes a deal with.

3.15, Resurrection

Chloe and Lex are tag-teaming Dr. Lia Teng; Chloe has discovered that Dr. Teng had a green card wedding most likely arranged by Lionel.  Teng and her husband work at the abandoned Metron Pharmaceuticals (from Redux) Lex admits his father refuses to sell the property and suggest Chloe back off a little before she gets in over her head yet again.

Clark joins Chloe at the Torch; he claims that working on a story will help keep his mind off of his dad in the hospital.  Chloe's contacted Metropolis General hospital and found out that Vince, a supposed organ transplant, never showed up; Clark concludes the helicopter that took the body out of Smallville must of instead taken Vince somewhere else.  Clark tracks it back to Metron where he listens to Teng and Lex talk.

3.14, Obsession

Smallville, Episode 3.14: ChloeSmallville, Episode 3.14: ChloeClark and Chloe are at LuthorCorp on a school field trip listening to Lionel Luthor talk to the kids, both annoyed at being there; Clark says he'd help Chloe escape through the fire exit except the trip is counted towards their final grade.   Lionel, as he's leaving says he's glad they are both "looking to the future."   Chloe keeps snarking about Lionel and the teacher breaks up their "jaded little fan club."  Clark ends up in another elevator that inexplicable breaks with him and another student, Alicia Baker, inside.  Clark uses his powers to save them, as does Alicia, and Chloe rushes to Clark after the incident to make sure he's okay.

Clark goes to Chloe a few days later for help after Alicia has attacked her father and has been stalking after Clark.   He admits he should of told her soon but Chloe understands keeping her confidence, however "once she went psycho, all bets are off."  They hatch a plan to lure Alicia into a lead painted room; Chloe makes a sob-story confession to Alicia where Clark tries to trap Alicia in the room.

3.13, Velocity

Chloe goes back to Lex a day or two later, telling him about the needle she saw Adam use and showing off the vial she found.  The lab she took it too say it had a tiny amount of blood platelets that weren't human nor animal; Lex is amused at her disregard for breaking into confidential medical records. Chloe also points out that Adam had a Dr. Lia Teng from Metropolis visit him twice a week, but she's not a general practitioner, she's a molecular biologist.  Lex asks her not to tell any of this new information to Lana.

A few days later she's working with Clark at the Torch on his article on Dante - a local street racer who has Pete over a barrel.  Chloe points out that Clark seems very invested, and while he tries to play it off as journalist enthusiasm, she questions if his source is Pete.   Clark relents that he's keeping a secret and is trying to protect Pete.  Chloe says that maybe Pete will listen to her instead because she's merely his friend (unlike Clark's sibling like bond with Pete); she also discovers that all the license plates Clark found are from stolen cars.   Clark decides to go to the sheriff.

3.12, Hereafter

Chloe and Pete have gossip about Adam for Clark; Clark's not interested deciding to simply be friends with Lana and changing topics to Jordan Cross a new kid he's been assigned to show around.  He believes that Jordan has premonitions through touch, and Chloe says given Clark's record with Wall material that they'll look into it.  Clark thanks her but she says he doesn't need too -- " it's kind of fun being Woodward to [his] Bernstein again."*

Chloe is walking though SHS when she sees Adam Knight sneaking around; she follows him into a science lab where she sees him injecting himself.   She sneaks the syringe out and goes to tell Clark, but remembers what he said about Adam being off topic.  Clark says he's confirmed Jordan's powers with a Ledger article from when Jordan was six; Chloe one ups him by already going to the courthouse and finding out that Jordan was born the day of the meteor shower and a meteor killed his mother. They hear a commotion outside and Clark rushes to check up on Jordan.

Chloe goes to the Talon to see Lana; she says she's having  "one of those "it sucks to be a reporter" days."   Lana asks what's going on and Chloe tells her what she found.

3.11, Delete

Well, what about a psyedonym? She's my cousin. She won't mind at all. She's not interested in journalism.

Lois Lane?

Chloe Sullivan is leaving the Daily Planet when she's stopped by George "Max" Taylor; he tells her that she's pissed off someone because they can't even print her name in the classifieds.   She jokes about being blacklisted before she graduates, before having an idea.  She passes Max a yellow floppy with some stories she wants him to look at; Chloe suggests using a pseudonym if he can't get around the name issue -- Lois Lane.  It's the name of her cousin who "isn't interested in journalism at all."

3.10, Whisper

After going blind in a freak accident involving kryptonite and heat vision, Clark attempts to go back to school; sounds suddenly become amplified, specifically Chloe talking on a cellphone(unknowingly) yards away.*   She's arguing with Lionel Luthor about researching Clark yet again; she reiterates that she's done with their deal.  Lionel warns her from going back to Lex at all and tells her she will give him a new report on Clark.

Chloe visits him later in the day, clueless that he knows the truth.  Clark brings up Lionel anyway, asking her how long she's been dealing with the billionaire.  Chloe admits that it's been since last spring but she didn't tell him anything he didn't already know and he wasn't sharing anything with her.   Clark is livid that she traded him for a column and some new Torch computers regardless; she replies that Lionel caught her at a moment of weakness.   Chloe adds that once Lionel had a hold of her, he didn't want to let go; she thought of all people, Clark would of understood making a stupid decision.

3.09, Asylum

Chloe catches Clark at the Torch late at night; he's working on trying to prove that Lex doesn't belong in Belle Reve.  Clark's pulled Lex's medical files but Chloe says they don't prove conclusively, she suggests coming back in the morning to help him out.   Chloe is helping Lana with her rehabilitation and suggests he help; Clark replies that had Lana wanted his help, he would of been there.   As she's about to leave, Clark stops her leaving as he reads off Lex's updated therapy.   Dr. Claire Foster recommended Lex for electro-shock therapy in 24 hours.

They confront Dr. Foster the next day in Metropolis to try to convince her to stop this procedure.  Chloe tells her that while she could "talk [her] way out of Lex's dubious drug regime" but that she's already had a lawsuit over electro-shock therapy.   Clark adds that just because Lionel Luthor is paying her off, it doesn't mean she has to go through with it.

3.08, Shattered

When Lex is attacked in his house, he goes to Clark for help; Clark is then told that Chloe and Lex were working together to take down Lionel. Clark goes to pick Chloe up asking her how she got involved; she plays it off as a story that she figured Lex would be interested in. Apparently she had no idea that Lex would theorize that Lionel killed his parents, and points out that she's not going to be the only one in trouble if this is true. Clark tells her that he won't "leave her alone" with these people about.

Clark takes her back to Kent Farm, where Lionel Luthor is talking with his parents. Lionel claims Lex has had a psychotic break and that he needs to find his son. Neither Clark nor Chloe tell them that Lex is hiding out in the barn until after Lionel has left. Chloe watches over Lex while Clark explains the situation to his parents. Lex walks in on the conversation accusing them all of hiding things from him.

3.07, Magnetic

Smallville, Episode 3.07: Chloe and LanaSmallville, Episode 3.07: Chloe and LanaChloe and Lana go to the end of the fair to have a fun time; while there Chloe points out that Clark not wanting to get back together with Lana is his issue, not Lana's.   Seth Nelson works at the fair and sneaks her a prize; he as a crush on Lana.  Chloe tells Lana to "expand her horizons."

Later, Chloe's waiting for Clark to come help her with the Torch.  Instead, it's Lex who says he's discovered that Chloe's looking into his father's past including obscure medial records.   He also tells her that he know she's a "good reporter" and that his father pulled string to make her the youngest reporter in the history of the Daily Planet.*  Chloe tells him he can tell his father if he wants, since only by looking at them as well could he know that she visited the Metropolis County Records.
